A ship can become a floating monument if it is older than fifty years and has a Dutch berth or sails under the Dutch flag. Furthermore, it must have been a defining feature of Dutch waters more than fifty years ago or typical of the development of Dutch shipbuilding. On 2 November 2005, an application was submitted to the National Association for the Preservation of Historic Commercial Vessels for registration in the register of floating monuments. The application was processed and the two assessors visited De Hoop in mid-November 2005 and subjected it to an inspection. Final registration took place on 01-12-2005. De Hoop is classified in category A. The wheelhouse, cabin and hull ensemble safeguard the monumental character of the ship.
